We both have a passion for photography, despite this we didn’t purposely set out to become content creators. We actually started our Instagram after being involved in Australia’s Marriage Equality adverts. When our advert aired we received a lot of interest from people who wanted to hear more about our story and to follow our journey.

Pretty much as soon as we created our account we started getting DMs from teenagers who were being bullied or whose families have disowned them. They talk of feeling isolated, alone, rejected, and some of them are suicidal. Nearly all of them tell us that they use Instagram as an escape, a place to seek advice and a reason to hope. We realised that we had a unique platform to help people and a voice to represent our community. We felt that this was really important after seeing the damaging effects of the NO campaign.

We have since made it our mission to persuade more companies to use LGBTQ+ influencers. Since starting our instagram we have launched a successful blog, a pinterest account, facebook page and youtube channel. We have been absolutely blown away by the positive response by companies and their consumers towards us and our work. We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with some of Australia’s biggest brands. We passionately believe that if teenagers see lesbian couples representing brands they like it can have a positive impact on their self esteem.

CHALLENGES

The influencer landscape has traditionally been fairly saturated with white, wealthy, cis gender, straight influencers. While many of our absolute favorite influencers fit this bracket, it’s not representative of the population as a whole. Companies are starting to realise the value of being more inclusive, but there will always be companies that continue to play it safe and refuse to work with us. Often we see adverts that we would love to apply for requesting “a couple” but we realise that small print requests “one male and one female”.

BRANDS YOU’LL WORK WITH

We always look to try and develop a long standing partnership with the brands we work with.

For this reason we only choose brands that we genuinely resonate with. We have built a highly engaged audience, who trust our opinions. Being authentic is more important to us than money. We would never dream to promoting a product or a brand that we didn’t like. Our favourite brand would be one that gives us a bit of direction while still allowing us artistic licence. We also love what we do so we make sure that we look for brands that are fun and energetic or have purpose.

YES TO BRANDS IF:

We love working with new and interesting products and services. We also love brands that have an ethical or ecological stance. Our focus in life and therefore Instagram is sustainability, recycling and living in what we believe to be the wholesome way. It’s also always refreshing to work with people that really understand the benefits of hiring influencers to promote their products.

NO TO BRANDS IF:

We wouldn’t work with a brand that didn’t align with our values, for example we would prefer not to work with a makeup brand that tested on animals. We have no preference when it comes to the type of business that we promote, we have worked with charities, startups and large corporations.

DO’s and DON’T’s FOR BRANDS TO FOLLOW WHEN WORKING WITH INFLUENCERS:

Give a detailed brief with as much information as possible, but try not to put words in the influencers mouth of give them too much of a script.

Be interesting and try new things, don’t be afraid to think outside the box.

Understand that working to a brief, creating content and editing photos takes time. Give a reasonable amount of time to ensure that you get the best possible content.

PREDICTION FOR THE INFLUENCER INDUSTRY:

Influencer marketing has allowed companies the freedom to try new ways of advertising their products without a huge financial risk. They can complete A/B testing with different influencers and different styles of photography. It means that marketing is becoming less rigid and safe. Companies are choosing to work with a variety of influencers from different backgrounds and areas of society. Effectively, opening up whole new audiences and reaching new customers.

Our prediction for the influencer landscape in the future is that this inclusive use of advertising will not only continue, but will grow dramatically.
