Summer and swimwear go hand in hand, so this month we decided to delve into the world of Anna -Maria Sommer. With a new life in Bali, and a sizzling collection of swimwear the future is heating up for this ex model, turned designer of the label Sommer Swim.
Name: Anna-Maria Sommer
Nickname: German … (bad I know) 😉
What inspired you to start your business?
I have always been interested in fashion. Being exposed to the industry at a young age as a model I just fell in love with the creatives I met. That gave me the grounding and inspiration to start my own business. I love the beach, so combining fashion with my ‘sommer’ lovin’ was the perfect combination. Pun definitely intended there 😉
How long have you been running your business?
Sommer Swim came to life last year with the first season launched in 2014. The first release is extremely challenging and teaches you valuable lessons. This release has been challenging in different ways but I was definitely more prepared.
How long have you been living in Bali for?
I first holidayed in Bali in 2009. After falling in love with the island and its people and enjoying some extended stays, I made a more permanent move in 2011. For a few years I would island hop between Australia and Bali a few months at a time but I’m now based here the majority of the year and am really grateful to call Bali home.
Best piece of advice you have been given?
If you don’t have passion, then you have nothing. If you don’t believe in what you are doing, why would anyone else?”
What does a typical day for you involve?
Since the launch of Riviera things have been blissfully manic – I know those two words shouldn’t go together but that’s how things feel at the moment. My day is go go go from morning till night – organising photographers, finding new shoot locations, keeping up with new orders, responding to customer enquiries and running the social media accounts – the list keeps going.
Where can you be found on the weekend? And doing what?
While the work doesn’t stop Saturday to Sunday on weekends I like to get away from the hustle and bustle as often as possible and hike up to Ubud to recharge or plan day trips to beach destinations like Bingin and Padang Padang.
What’s the one thing you never leave the house without?
Well my mode of transport is a scooter so that’s easy – helmet. Safety first.
My wardrobe consists of…
Apart from bikinis I love Faithfull the Brand. Their items are perfect for island life and travel. Also can’t live without my Chloe Susanna boots
I’m obsessed with…
Crème de La Mer – best beauty product around
What will we find you doing this Spring/Summer?
I am planning a trip to Europe. I get a lot of my inspiration from trips abroad so I am looking forward to being close to home again. I was born and raised in Germany so it will be great to get home and spend some quality time with family and friends.
