Less is more: Beauty tips with Tammi Hendricks

  • Tue 15th Dec 2015

Beautiful looking makeup is a balance between simplicity and good quality products. Makeup Artist Tammi Hendricks knows this better than most, working in the industry for over 16 years she has seen and worked with the best creatives of bridal, fashion, advertising and corporate, as well as some of the most recogniseable models in Australia.

Tammi achieves a clients’ ‘best face’ by not masking natural beauty, creating lasting and radiant looks for any occasion. Having a long-lasting look is also crucial when attending castings all day, often running from one side of the city to the other with small time frames (try finding a place or time to touch up your makeup!). Not only do casting directors expect to see you at your best, but the images they take of you will be passed around to other creatives in their team to decide if you’re right for their campaign.

So we asked Tammi about some of her favourite products and what her kit consists of. Take some inspiration from some of the incredible faces she has perfected as well and see if it makes a difference to your next casting.

Right now my favourite beauty/makeup product is…

Cover FX’s Custom Cover Drops. It’s a liquid pigment that can be added to any products; serums, oils, primers to add coverage or directly onto the skin as a foundation or concealer. It’s completely buildable, always radiant and creates an illusion of perfect skin, that is lit from within.

 My kit consists of…

Skin-loving products that provide a flawless base and luminous coverage. I am obsessed with Make Up For Ever’s new HD foundation, any NARS products (they are all impeccable), Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow collection, Cover FX, Becca, IT Cosmetics and Giorgio Armani. I could seriously write a thesis on this.

My favourite job to date would be…

I do a lot of bridal so it would have to be the time I rescued a bride from an epic makeup fail 2 days before her wedding. Her original makeup artists had pulled out a week prior and then a falling branch cut her chin wide open and created a huge scar 2 days before the wedding. I spent hours working with the team at PM Studios to find the right product that would cover her wound and still look beautiful and radiant. On the day, the bride was beside herself with worry, but the end result was incredible and the look of relief on her face was priceless. I’ll do anything to put a smile on my client’s face – it meant the world to me that I could make her feel as amazing as she had dreamed. I absolutely loved working with the incredible professionals at PM Studio and my network of fellow makeup artists to find the solution. When you put your heads together you can achieve greatness!

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given in your makeup career…

Less is more. And it’s what I teach my clients.

What’s your favourite thing about the industry…

The learning process is constant and it reveals itself in the most unexpected ways. I get to work with a myriad of creative that all bring their individual talents to the table and inspire me in so many different ways; photographers, art directors, stylists, talent. When we are pushed beyond our comfort zone, beyond our limits and work with other like-minded individuals – that’s when we truly create magic.

Advice to up and coming makeup artists on how to get started…

Know what you stand for, create a brand that reflects your unique value and above all, provide a level of customer service that makes you unforgettable.
