  • Sat 5th Mar 2016

It’s not everyday you receive a personal invitation by Donald Trump to work as a head stylist at the Miss Universe Pageant. But when you are a multi-award winning hair stylist, perhaps you do. You could say that Hair & Makeup Artist Wade Ambler isn’t ambling his way through life. He’s a true example of when passion meets hard work what incredible things can be accomplished. We asked him what it’s like working in the industry and advice to newcomers…

Tell us about your experience starting out in the industry?

I started out in 2003 as an apprentice hairdresser that led into makeup artistry. I had no idea of the possibilities, or how broad our industry is and 13 years later I’m still in love.

What has been the highlight of your career to date?

There has been many highlights in my career but some of my favourite moments would have to be working on the Hair and Makeup team for Miss Universe in The Bahamas or, working backstage on Hair and Makeup for Lady Gaga in Sydney. My latest accomplishment was recently opening up my Salon WĀK The Salon

What’s your favourite part of being a Hair and Makeup Artist?

I love the fact that the Hair and Makeup industry is forever changing. It never gets boring and there’s always more to learn and explore. Even though I have hundreds of tear sheets nothing beats seeing your work in print – it gets me every time!

Advice for HMUA’s starting out in the industry?

It takes time to build your portfolio, so do your research. ‘Before and after’ imagery of your work is a really great way to display your skill and speaks directly to your audience on social media. It’s a key tool I use for successful user engagement. And lastly when your building your portfolio, clean and fresh work is always better and won’t date. Always stay humble.
