To quote one of the most talented designers in history, Yves Saint Laurent “Fashion Fades; style is eternal.” What this means is pretty much that fashion lasts a season taking with them the it-pieces that were popular but there will always be certain things that will ever go out of style.

So with that in mind I have rounded up my top 20 wardrobe essentials for that I believe every guy should have in his closet at all times.

1.THE OXFORD SHIRT
An essential that I think every guy needs in his closet. A crisp, white, slim-fit oxford looks good on pretty much everyone so make sure you have one, preferably a few.

2.BASIC TEE SHIRT
A must have staple and something that is style fluid. Find one that fits your body and wear is under a bomber jacket, blazer or even on it’s own. I would suggest buying one in black, navy, white and grey. Trust me if you don’t have one in these three colours there will be a time this year where you will wish you had that grey crew neck tee.

3. SLIM FIT JEANS
I always say everyone needs a great of jeans that hug you nice around the ass, your legs basically accentuate the assets we all know you worked hard for at the gym and just hit the above the ankles. Find a pair of those in a dark blue, black and white.

4. BOMBER JACKET
A staple in my closet and something I could never live with out. It’s one of the most versatile styles of outerwear and can be worn practically all year-round by everyone.

5. NAVY SUIT

If you wear a suit to work even if you don’t as I was taught from my father at a young age you should always one or more suits. A navy, single-breasted well-tailored suit is a great place to start.

6. SWEATER
A versatile piece that you will come to love (trust me I have four one in black, light grey, white and navy) A good sweater can be warn with pretty much everything and makes a perfect layering piece in winter.

7. TIMEPIECE

I know you have a phone that tells you’re the time but a good watch is a wardrobe piece. If you’re not a big watch person I suggest buying simple timepiece with a single colour band, Daniel Wellington is a good place to start and affordable for everyone.

8. THE TRENCHCOAT
Stylish and yet incredibly functional wardrobe essential. The trench coat can be styled up with that white oxford shirt you have or down with a basic tee shirt and slim fit jeans.

9. LACE UP BOOTS

Boots aren’t just for hipsters or tradies anymore. They’re an essential part of every guy’s wardrobe and a style versatile piece that can be dressed up or down.

10. THE BLAZER
Perfect for those occasions where it’s formal but not formal enough that you should wear a suit. One in a dark navy is a good place to start you can dress it up chinos and shirt or down with jeans and a tee.

11. THE POLO

Perfect for the summer but also can be worn year round style up or down. The polo shirt allowed you to keep it formal but casual with a sporty twist.

12. WHITE SNEAKERS
Recent convert to this myself what I have learnt is that you can never go wrong with a good pair of white kicks. They can be worn with a navy suit on casual Fridays or the go to look for everyone jeans and a tee.

13. LACE UP SHOES
A must have for every guy and the most useful type of footwear out there! Guys should invest in a good pair of black and brown lace ups, a good classic pair will last you a long time.

14. SLIM NAVY CHINOS
Style versatile and a great alternative to jeans, as you can’t always be seen around town in jeans and are also a good option if you aren’t in the mood to wear suit trousers. I would start with a pair of slim navy chinos and then add to the collection of darker and lighter tones.

15. WOOL-FLANNEL TROUSERS
Perfect with a shite shirt or tucked in tee with a sweater or blazer over the top, a good pair of wool-flannel trousers in a grey or neutral colour are a great style versatile piece and just like the chinos are a great alternative to jeans or chino’s if you’re not feeling them.

16. A TUXE
I know what you’re thinking why the hell do I need a tuxe, simple because you just do and you never know when you might have a wedding or a black tie event that requires you to wear one.

17. A BELT TO LAST
A wardrobe staple that unfortunately a lot of guys I’ve met some I’ve dated have gotten so wrong. Invest your money in two quality simple classic leather belts one in black and one in brown that you can wear for years.

18. CHINO SHORTS
Even though I seldom wear shorts these days I do have a few pair of Chino shorts if I need them. Great for days at the beach or with a polo for those afternoons in town. You should always have at least two pairs of these one in a navy and one in a cool print.

19.  LEATHER JACKET
A must have for any guy is a good leather jacket. It’s style versatile and the perfect go to piece for date night.  A classic black biker style is a good place to start.

20. A CASUAL BUTTON DOWN SHIRT
Whether it’s in a soft pastel colour or a print a few slim fit casual button down shirts are always good to have on hand.
