Chad Hurst’s journey is a lesson in embracing the unexpected. What started as a chance scouting on a worksite turned into a 12-year modeling career that took him across the globe. Fast forward to today, Chad’s back in Sydney, balancing his time between running a thriving fitness business and staying connected to the creative world. His story is proof that saying “yes” to unexpected opportunities can lead to a life you never imagined—one full of passion, purpose, and a whole lot of hustle.
- What inspired you to become a model/actor/creator, and how did you get started in the industry?
I started out as a tradie, working on-site and doing the usual grind, when I was unexpectedly scouted. That opened the door to modeling for me, and soon enough, I found myself shifting gears and going all in. That was around 12 years ago. I was lucky to get the opportunity to work overseas, where I spent about 8-9 years really building my modeling career. But when COVID hit, I moved back to Australia, and now I’m focusing more on staying local.
- Can you walk us through a typical day in your life as a model from start to finish?
Most days start with looking after myself—it’s a big part of the job. Keeping healthy and fit is essential, so my mornings are usually dedicated to a good workout, staying active, and eating right. That routine keeps me grounded, especially with the demands of both the gym and modeling. After that, it's about balancing my time between gym responsibilities and any modeling work or brand partnerships I might have going on.
- Are you a model/actor/creator full-time/part-time, or casually? And how do you manage your finances, and what strategies have you found most effective?
Modeling was full-time for me until I opened my gym. Now, being a gym owner takes up a lot of my energy and time, but it’s been worth it. I’d saved up over the past 12 years, and that gave me the chance to invest in my own business. It’s definitely a balance, but I’ve found that using my earnings wisely has made all the difference in building something long-term.
- What types of brand partnerships have you worked on in the past, and how do you decide which collaborations to take on as a model/actor/creator?
I’ve been involved in a range of partnerships—mostly with brands in the car, alcohol, fitness, and clothing sectors. I stick to fields that really align with my interests and lifestyle. If a brand feels like a natural fit, it’s easier to promote it authentically. For me, it’s about partnerships that resonate with who I am and what I actually use or enjoy.
- Can you share any tips for negotiating rates with brands, and how do you determine your own value as a model/actor/creator?
One of my go-to approaches is to build a relationship with the brand first. I find that creating a genuine connection leads to more work and often builds trust. I’m not afraid to drop my rates if I know it’ll be an ongoing relationship—that long-term potential can be worth more than a one-time gig. Knowing your value is about understanding what you bring to the table and trusting that a solid relationship with the brand can lead to even more opportunities.
- How do you stay updated with industry trends and best practices as a model/actor/creator, and what resources do you rely on for education and inspiration?
Staying social is key for me. Keeping in touch with industry contacts, attending events, and just being present in those circles keeps me in the loop. The industry moves fast, so I find it’s important to keep a finger on the pulse by learning from those around me.
- Have you faced any challenges or setbacks in your career as a model/actor/creator and how did you overcome them?
Absolutely! This past year has been challenging—trying to grow my gym while staying active in modeling meant I had to make some tough choices. I ended up missing out on some great modeling opportunities because of the time I dedicated to the gym. But I’ve learned to just roll with it; if something doesn’t go as planned, I try not to stress over it. Bad things happen, but it’s all part of the journey, right?
- How do you achieve work-life balance as a model/actor/creator even when life throws unexpected challenges your way?
Balance can be tough, especially when you’re juggling different roles. I’d say I’m used to dealing with curveballs—bad luck seems to follow me around, but I’ve learned to let it go and not let it get to me. Finding that balance means not sweating the small stuff and focusing on what matters most day to day.
- How do you see the industry evolving in the next 5-10 years, and what changes do you anticipate?
The industry has already changed so much in the past five years, so who knows what’s next? I think it’s important to stay adaptable because trends come and go, and the way brands work with talent is evolving. The key is to keep an open mind and be ready to pivot when things shift.
- Can you share any upcoming projects or partnerships that you're excited about, and how do you plan to continue growing your brand as a model/actor/creator?
I’ve been putting a lot of focus into a new business, which I’m excited about. I think it has potential to help me grow my brand in new ways. Diversifying has always been a part of my plan, and this next project feels like the right step forward.
- What advice would you give to aspiring models/actors/creators who are starting out and looking to build a successful career in the industry?
It’s a tough industry, and there’s a lot of rejection—probably 99% of the time. But that 1%? That can lead to something big. My advice is to stay resilient, keep pushing, and don’t get discouraged by the no’s. That one yes can make all the difference.
